The 2024 campaign season in Pennsylvania is now in full swing following yesterday’s filing deadlines for candidates to appear on primary ballots. The Commonwealth is critical in the race for the White House and for control of the U.S. Senate. And at the local level, Allegheny County voters will elect representatives to the U.S. House of Representatives and both chambers of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, potentially determining the majority party in each.
The U.S. House has a slight Republican majority, the chamber split 219-212. The Pennsylvania House is even closer, with Democrats holding a 102-100 edge. In the state Senate, Republicans hold a 28-23 edge.

The filings set up eight contested primary races locally. U.S. Rep. Summer Lee, D-Swissvale, and state House members Joe McAndrew, D-Penn Hills, Abigail Salisbury, D-Swissvale, are each facing primary challengers after their first term in office. Three legislative districts are open because the incumbent is retiring or seeking another office.
Nomination petitions can be challenged in court until Feb. 20. Candidates who have qualified for the ballot have until Feb. 28 to withdraw from the ballot. Third party and independent candidates can access the November General Election ballot outside the primary system by filing nomination papers by Aug. 1.
Primary elections are scheduled for April 23. The General Election is Nov. 5.
