House Democrats have chosen Hakeem Jeffries to succeed Nancy Pelosi as their party leader, making him the first Black person to lead one of the two major parties in either chamber of Congress, CNN reports.

On Wednesday (November 30), House Democrats made the historic decision “behind closed doors” on Capitol Hill.

Jeffries faced no challengers in his run to lead the House Democratic caucus. Since Republicans will hold the majority in the next Congress, Jeffries will lead in a Democratic minority.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
