by PublicSource Reporters

The Allegheny County Department of Health [ACHD] reported 63 new COVID-19 infections Friday and seven COVID-related fatalities, bringing the county case tally since March 14 to 10,128.

The new cases come from 1,605 tests conducted from August 17 through Aug. 27. The newly reported cases are in individuals ranging from 7 months to 97 years old. All of the deaths were in individuals over the age of 59, and four are associated with long-term care facilities.

County-specific information and a statewide map are available on the COVID-19 Data Dashboard or on the Western Pennsylvania Regional Data Center’s website.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health [DOH] reported 835 new infections and 20 fatalities Friday, bringing the statewide tallies to 131,991 cases and 7,655 deaths.

Anticipating that COVID-19 will disrupt the Nov. 3 general election with a deluge of mail-in ballots, Gov. Tom Wolf urged lawmakers on Thursday to quickly pass his plan to ensure every vote is counted.

Wolf’s proposed changes would allow or require counties to:

  • Appoint poll workers to fill vacancies earlier than five days before the election.
  • Start pre-canvassing ballots 21 days before the election, rather than at 7 a.m. on Election Day. This does not mean tabulating votes before the close of polls at 8 a.m.
  • Count ballots postmarked by Election Day up to the Friday after the election.
  • Send mail-in ballots to voters 28 days before the election, rather than the 14 days currently required.

“These proposed reforms will further strengthen our elections, help people to vote safely from home, and assist counties in processing the surge in mail-in ballots,” Wolf said in a press release.

The deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot is Oct. 27. For more information on voting by mail, click here.
