County officials plead for continued vigilance after reporting a rise in COVID cases Monday

The Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD] reported 45 new COVID-19 infections on Monday, prompting health officials to hold an afternoon press conference to address the rise in cases. The new cases are still under investigation.

ACHD Director Dr. Debra Bogen said she does not believe the June 2 primary or the Black Lives Matter protests have contributed to the jump cases. She and County Executive Rich Fitzgerald pleaded for vigilance, recommending small outdoor gatherings, continued wearing of face masks over the nose and mouth and practicing good hand hygiene. The briefing aired on Facebook Live.

Monday’s numbers bring the countywide tally to 2,220 cases, 178 deaths and 365 past and present hospitalizations. Over the weekend, county health officials announced 37 total new infections, one death and two hospitalizations.

Pennsylvania reported 456 new cases and three additional fatalities Monday, bringing the statewide case count to 82,186 and 6,426 deaths. Personal care and nursing homes continue to bear the brunt of the infections, with residents and workers representing roughly one in four of all cases. Resident deaths account for nearly seven in 10 fatalities. Over the weekend, state health officials reported 968 infections and 24 deaths. Roughly 6,219 of all infections are among healthcare workers.

More than 3,400 inmates in state correctional facilities have been released since March 1, Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration announced on Monday, saying the largest multi-month reduction was likely aided by those let out over infection concerns related to COVID-19. Wolf also touted in a press release that less than 1% of the incarcerated have tested positive.
