Allegheny County reported 16 COVID-19 cases on Friday, no new deaths and no new hospitalizations. The county has now reported a total of 2,138 cases, 177 deaths and 361 past and present hospitalizations.
Pennsylvania reported 526 cases and 38 new deaths Friday. The state has now reported a total of 80,762 cases and 6,399 deaths.
Personal care and nursing homes continue to bear the brunt of the infections, with residents and workers representing roughly one in five of all cases. Resident deaths account for nearly seven in 10 fatalities.
- Gov. Tom Wolf announced that 12 more counties will move to the green phase of reopening on June 26: Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Erie, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia and Susquehanna. As of next Friday, every county will be green except Lebanon County, where county commissioners voted to reopen in late May. “Now, the county is facing an uptick in cases, and is unable to move to green,” Wolf said in a release Friday.
- On Friday, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry announced its unemployment numbers for May. Based on data collected the week of May 10-16, the state’s unemployment rate was 13.1%. This figure is down 3% from April, but 8.9% higher than that of May 2019.
- Gov. Tom Wolf reminded Pennsylvanians on Thursday that they are required to wear masks when entering any business while a county is in the green or yellow phases of reopening. Public health officials say masks are critical for preventing the spread of COVID-19 through airborne droplets. The reminder came as some residents are alleging, in more than 30 lawsuits against Giant Eagle, that the supermarket chain is not abiding by an exemption for people with medical issues that preclude wearing masks.
