With the theme “A Taste of Africa,” Community Empowerment Association (CEA) celebrated their anniversary and the birthday of its founder, Rashad Byrdsong, on June 9. Hundreds attended the program and enjoyed a great evening filled with food and fashion. The evening was coordinated by Wadria Taylor, the creator of Style & Steel, a marketing and event-planning firm, and Style Week Pittsburgh, along with Allegra Johnson, creator and host of CitySTYLE412, a fashion, lifestyle and travel video blog.

The crowd enjoyed an Afrocentric fashion show that featured S Moye Fashions, RubyDawn Designs, ProBantuStyle, Aya Duafe, The Queens Closet 831 and Ujamaa Collective. With KDKA’s Lynne Hayes-Freeland as host and Taylor introducing the fashion scenes, the runway came alive with the Winny Binay African Dance Ensemble and out of this world fashion. At the conclusion of the evening, Byrdsong thanked the audience for the many years of support and thanked the CEA staff for their great work.

Community Empowerment Association (CEA) was founded in 1993 to establish an organized, structural approach to address the specific needs of at-risk families in distressed, marginalized communities. CEA’s success emanated through its grassroots origins serving residents of predominantly-African American, inner-city communities in Pittsburgh. CEA’s mission is to create spaces of empowerment, education, and fellowship that reconstruct and fortify the cultural foundation of the Black family. Additionally, by consistently generating jobs and economic sustainability, CEA serves as an institutional foundation for the strengthening of Black communities.
