LOS ANGELES—Fans of comics and action-adventure fiction are in for an exciting treat following the launch of the new graphic novel series, “Rayven Choi.” The book features comics’ first standalone Black superheroine and is tipped to be made into a film.
Written by filmmaker, Shequeta L. Smith, “Rayven Choi” tells the gripping story of an African American girl who is orphaned and sent to South Korea in order to preserve her safety. For 20 years, Rayven has had to deal with the nightmares of the hitman who murdered her parents right in front of her and constant fear for her own life. Finally, ready to face her fears, she returns to America fully intent on executing revenge on the hitman who robbed her of her family and a happy childhood.
“Rayven Choi” is Smith’s debut novel. She wrote the story in 2003, but always thought that it would make an interesting comic book/graphic novel. “Since the Blaxploitation era, there hasn’t really been a stand-alone, kickass, Black superheroine in film or in comics,” said Smith. “With ‘Rayven Choi,’ I’m looking to bring back the badass Black heroine on an international level.”

Released in mid-July, “Rayven Choi” is already a hit with readers. The book reached the number 1 spot on Amazon’s Hot Sellers within a few days of its release and boasts a perfect five-star rating. One reader said: “A refreshing story featuring a strong female lead; fast-paced and engaging, I couldn’t stop reading! Highly recommend for fans of comics or anyone who loves a great story.”
“Rayven Choi” is the first in a six-part series. The book is a real page turner and captures the reader’s interest from start to finish. But that’s not all. Fans are in for a further thrill as the 14-minute short film version of the book is set to screen at film festivals this year. And if the trailer is anything to go by, then all indications are that the film will be just as exciting as the book.
“Rayven Choi” is available in both English and Korean. The book is now available in electronic format and can be purchased on Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, Kobo and iTunes/iBook. For further details, visit: https://www.rayvenchoifilms.com.
