The sound of gospel music recently filled the halls of Manor Care Nursing Home on 5th Avenue, in Shadyside, when the Men’s Choir of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, under the direction of the Rev. Anthony “Pops” Mitchell, lifted their voices in song in the 2nd floor solarium.
The concert marked the first of a series of four to be performed in designated nursing homes throughout Black History Month. Songs, such as “This Means War” and “If I Can Help Somebody,” excited both residents and nursing staff, bringing many to tears as the choir demonstrated choreographed steps and clapped to the familiar church rhythms. The finale selection added to their joy by offering each resident in attendance an opportunity to participate as the “lead singer” on the last song.
Canterbury Place in Lawrenceville, Seneca Place in Penn Hills, and The VA Hospital in Fox Chapel and Highland Park Care Center were other scheduled stops.
