RUSTON, La. (AP) _ Grambling State University’s Psychology and Sociology Club has collected 1,967 books that will be donated to various state prison libraries.
Club President Jack Chandler tells The Ruston Daily Leader (https://bit.ly/1H9z6yh ) that his group, along with organizations from four other universities, created the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Challenge to collect books after touring a prison and noticing an absence of books.
The other schools participating are Alcorn State, Savannah State, Alabama A&M and Southern University.
Chandler says he doesn’t know how many books were collected by the other schools, but he’s confident “they raised plenty.”
The GSU club’s adviser, Assistant Professor of Sociology Matthew Sheptoski, says the books they collected will go to various prisons including facilities in Richwood and Angola and possibly locally to the Lincoln Parish Detention Center.
