After 10 year promoting diversity, youth and disability-awareness and community outreach initiatives, Chaz Kellem, is leaving the Pittsburgh Pirates for a position with the YWCA of Greater Pittsburgh.
Pirates President Frank Coonley made the announcement during his PowerBreakfast address to the African American Chamber of Commerce, Sept. 18.
“He’s been offered a position there and has decided to take it,” said Coonley. “It’s a loss for us, especially since he’d just taken over a new initiative on youth participation in baseball. But he’s a great guy and it’s a great opportunity for him.”
Kellum joined the Pirates as an account executive in 2005, right after graduating from Edinboro University. By 2008, he had moved up to director of diversity initiatives.
Magdeline Jensen, CEO of the YWCA, said she is thrilled to have Kellum joining her team.
“Chaz will be our senior director, advocacy for race and gender equity,” she said.
“We are very excited because he is established in the community for his work on diversity initiatives and he has all qualification we could possibly want. He’s a great speaker and has been a real bridge builder throughout the community and will be with our staff internally as well.”
Kellem was not immediately available for comment. His official start is Oct 6. See more in Wednesday’s print edition.
