U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez traveled to Pittsburgh recently to highlight cutting-edge workforce training programs at Carnegie Mellon University. He then offered remarks to the graduates of the A. Philip Randolph Institute “Breaking the Chains of Poverty” Workforce Development Program.
Perez joined Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale and Carnegie Mellon University Provost Farnam Jahanian to meet with start-up companies supported by the New App for Making It in America initiative.

This program received a $3 million grant through the U.S. Department of Labor’s Workforce Innovation Fund to help cultivate a new base for domestic manufacturing and expand apprenticeship opportunities in the technology sector.

Perez traveled to United Steelworkers to participate in the A. Phillip Randolph Institute’s Workforce Development Program graduation ceremony.

The trip highlighted the programs and partnerships that serve as the foundation for the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, the first major reform of federal job training in over 15 years. The law was passed with strong bipartisan support in Congress in part because of the emphasis on work-based training opportunities like apprenticeships.
