Every spring The Pittsburgh Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs Inc. hold their annual Founder’s Day Celebration. This year on April 18, they held their 56th Annual at the LeMont Restaurant. Rhonda Carson Leach, president of The Pittsburgh Club, said that each year NANBPW honors and thanks deserving individuals in the Pittsburgh Community who have given outstanding service or have achieved substantial goals. In addition, the club awards scholarships to college bound high school seniors seeking to further their education.
Also on this day, the organization’s highest honor is presented, the Sojourner Truth Award. It honors women exhibiting the attributes of their national matriarch. This year’s Sojourner Truth Awardee was Ruth Byrd Smith, director of the Allegheny County Department of Minority, Women and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise. Elise Roby Yanders, a first vice president at Merrill Lynch with over 25 years of experience providing financial and wealth management advice and services to individuals and organizations was selected as Professional Woman of the Year. Your’s truly was selected as Businesswoman of the Year. While Shawn Hicks, director of Administration for the African American Chamber of Commerce of Western Pennsylvania, received the Business Man of The Year Award. Scholarships valued at $500 each were presented to Savanna Edmunds, an Oakland Catholic High School senior, and Lauren Williams- Wiles, a North Hills High School senior.
With Anita Walker as mistress of ceremonies, Alice Paylor-Dais as a lively keynote speaker and the artistic dance performance by Madison Ware, over 150 enjoyed a scrumptious breakfast and the beautiful views from the LeMont restaurant.
NANBPWC Inc. was founded by seven courageous visionaries who sought to promote and protect the interests of business and professional women; to serve as advisors for young people seeking to enter business and professions; to improve the quality of life in local and global communities; and to foster good fellowship.
