PITTSBURGH (AP) – Pittsburgh’s public safety director says an investigation into excessive force will be conducted after a state trooper sued city police, alleging they arrested him on false charges and beat him.
Trooper David Williams says city officers falsely claimed that he attacked them when he tried to calm down a rowdy groomsman following a brawl after his brother’s wedding. He says they pushed and punched him, escalating a situation he was trying to help them control.
Public Safety Director Stephen Bucar said in a statement Tuesday that an internal investigation will be requested through the Office of Municipal Investigations. He said “an objective, impartial and thorough” probe is done in all cases involving allegations of excessive force.
Bucar also said state police and city officers have “a longstanding professional and positive working relationship.”
