The Senator John Heinz History Center in Association with the Smithsonian Institution presents a Black History Month Discussion and Book Signing with Sylviane Diouf at 2 p.m. at the Senator John Heinz History Center, 1212 Smithfield St., Strip District. Award-winning historian and author Sylviane Diouf will sign and discuss her recent book, “Slavery’s Exiles: The Story of the American Maroons.” Her discussion will explore the extent in which enslaved Africans went to seek freedom and independence from slavery and bondage. The Ordinary Sacred
Concept Art Gallery presents “Vanessa German: The Ordinary Sacred” at the Concept Art Gallery, 1031 S. Braddock Ave., Edgewood. Vanessa German balances poetry and subject matter to create works that explores African American history, the current state of race relations, and the power of art for transformation and healing. The exhibition will run through Feb. 26. Also on this day, join German at 2 p.m. for “An Ordinary Sacred Happening in Homewood” at the New Arthouse, 7701 Hamilton Ave., Homewood.
