 In his debut on Monday, Jan. 19th as the only African-American hosting a late-night TV show, Larry Wilmore attracted a very respectable 963,000 viewers, according to Nielsen. That means that the new entry on the Comedy Central cable channel was able to hold on to 79 percent of the 1.2 million viewers that watched hit lead-in show, “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” Among the valued 18-49 audience Wilmore drew 577,000. Wilmore — replacing Stephen Colbert after he was selected as successor to the retiring CBS late night star David Letterman — garnered good reviews for his new 30-minute show. “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore” draws on a similar formula as Stewart and Colbert with a humorous take on the day’s top news stories. Wilmore, a former actor, comedian and producer, as well as a writer for “In Living Color,” “Sister, Sister” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” Â uses headlines as his launch pad, but a panel of guests weigh in and are cornered with controversial questions in the hilarious “Keep It 100” segment. “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore” airs Monday – Thursday at 11:30 pm ET on Comedy Central. |
