Homewood neighborhoods plans to take on several new ventures in 2015 to advance the community. Homewood plans to embark on a new journey to enhance life for the community residents in numerous departments of living.
“This was an informational series that was extremely informative in our quest to be prepared for the multitude of opportunities slated for our neighborhood this year,” said Community Empowerment Association President & CEO Rashad Byrdsong.
On Jan. 10, CEA in conjunction with the Homewood Neighborhood Advisory Board on Urban Affairs, held the “Getting Ready for Community Benefits,” event for the Homewood community. The event took place at the CEA building at 7120 Kelley St.
“These forums are designed to get community residents involved and invested in becoming the architects and change agents for growth and development of Homewood,” Byrdsong said.
“Getting Ready for Community Benefits,” as a part of The People’s Plan For Homewood was an effort to get community residents ready for benefits that will be the result of new economic development in the neighborhood. A series of meetings, seminars, and workshops on topics aimed at preparing the residents for succession business development, homeownership, and new employment/career opportunities.
Countless residents of the neighborhood came to support the event. Residents of Homewood and residents of other neighborhoods of the city attended, ages 20-60.
“Homewood is a community that is dear to my heart, because I grew up here as a child,” said event attendee Raymond Tunstalle. “Not only did I spend time in Homewood as an adolescent, but I also spent several years in Homewood raising my own children. I try to help and support Homewood as much as I can, so attending this event was a no brainer. I enjoyed the event, and I’m excited about the plans they have for the community this year.”
During the forum several topics were discussed such as PNC Bank Money management, Homewood Urban Affairs Website, and Housing/Business Development. Research has shown that the stability of an affordable mortgage or rent can have an effect on the development of our children. Creating a healthy tax base generated by homeownership can support needed public services and educational investments in neighborhood schools. People were educated on renting and owning a home, providing future occupants with a fundamental understanding of the process.
A representative from PNC Bank came to discuss what residents must know in order to have better money management, and how PNC assists its customers live better financially.
“This series was beyond informative,” said attendee Howard Strodes. “I gained much new information. I encourage everyone to take part in these informal series. Getting Ready for Community Benefits was the perfect name for this forum, because we definitely benefited from it.”
