On Dec. 13, Kente Arts Alliance presented Mack Avenue Records recording star and Grammy Award-winning alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett at the New Hazlett Theater, located at 6 Allegheny Square East, in the North Side.
Garrett’s performance was the second segment in the Kente Arts Alliance’s series entitled Alto Madness.
Over the course of a stellar career that has spanned more than 30 years, Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Garrett has become the preeminent alto saxophonist of his generation. From his first gig with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, led by Mercer Ellington, through his time spent with musicians such as Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis, Garrett has always brought a vigorous yet melodic, and truly distinctive, alto saxophone sound to each musical situation.
Garrett is arguably one of the most imitated alto saxophone players in jazz. In his latest Mack Avenue Records release, the Grammy-nominated album “Pushing the World Away,” Garrett had to literally “push away” a steady flow of distractions to get to the inner core of the album, shifting priorities in his schedule and diving deep into the essence of the music.
Kente Arts Alliance is a non-profit arts organization that was established in 2007. Since it began, it has presented some of the music world’s most legendary performers including Pharoah Sanders, The Last Poets, and Hugh Masekela.
