Kwanzaa Celebration
DEC. 27—The Community Empowerment Association presents its 20th Annual Kwanzaa Celebration 2014 from 3-9 p.m. at CEA, 7120 Kelly St., Homewood. The event will feature the Balafon West African Dance Ensemble, master drummers, specialty vendors, African drumming and dancing, children’s activities, community awards and more. Girls’ Maker Night
JAN. 5—Assemble will host its Girls’ Maker Night from 4-6:30 p.m. at 5125 Penn Ave., Garfield. Every Monday night the program will engage girls in 6th-8th grades with STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) concepts. It uses hands-on activities to teach skills, improve problem solving, and build confidence. The sessions will be held in-house and be led by a female Assemble instructor. Black College Tour
JAN. 15—Applications are due for NEED’s 9th Annual Historical Black College Tour to take place in Spring 2015. High school students in grades 10th and 11th are invited to participate in a tour that will take them to 14 historically Black colleges and universities in seven eastern and southeastern states. In their application, students must include an official copy of their transcript and a letter of recommendations from their principal or guidance counselor. For more information, call 412-566-2760.
Spirit of King
JAN. 15—Port Authority of Allegheny County, the Kingsley Association, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the New Pittsburgh Courier will host the 2015 Spirit of King Awards Ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Kingsley Association, 6435 Frankstown Ave., East Liberty. The morning will honor the late K. Leroy Irvis and the late Anderson Little. The event posthumously honors local leaders who exemplify the spirit of the late Rev. Operation Home
JAN. 17—The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh will host its Operation Home Program from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at the Urban League, 2nd floor, 610 Wood St., Downtown. This monthly seminar on homeownership is designed to educate prospective homebuyers and arm them with the basic knowledge on how to navigate the path to mortgage qualification and maintaining homeownership.
