Women’s Breakfast Series
DEC. 12— Chatham University’s Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship will host its Leadership Breakfast Series from 8-9:30 a.m. at the James Laughlin Music Center, Woodland Road, Shadyside. The topic will be “Embracing Risks, Filling a Void, Knowing When to Walk Away: the Makings of the Successful Business.” Deb Mortillaro, a partner at Dreadnought Wines, will discuss how to use the difficulties of any industry and turn them into opportunities for profitable business by examining the rules and by filling a need. She will also give straight advice about when to do it, when to walk away and how to not be afraid of either decision. A continental breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m. Registration is required. Primetime-Pittsburgh
DEC. 16—The African American Chamber of Commerce of Western Pennsylvania and the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Supportive Services Center at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania will host its 2014 Primetime-Pittsburgh at the Koppers Conference Center, 436 Seventh Ave., Pittsburgh. This two-day event is a technical assistance and networking event for Primes and DBEs. There will be networking opportunities, workshops and a keynote address from District 11-0 Executive Daniel Cessna. Registration is required. Volunteers of America
DEC. 17—Volunteers of America will host its Brown Bag Lunch Series from 12-1 p.m. at 1650 Main St., Pittsburgh. The topic is “Communicate Professionally in Tweets, Blogs and Posts.” This workshop will help individuals polish their writing to make sure their writing represents them in the best light, especially in social media. Lunch & Learn
DEC. 18—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host its Lunch & Learn Series at 12:15 p.m. at the Downtown & Business Branch, 612 Smithfield St., Downtown. The topic will be “Accounting and Taxes for Small Businesses.” Robert Henkels of PTA Seminars Inc. will give small business tax tips, and discuss accounting procedures and what one needs to know about keeping their books straight this tax season and beyond. The Second Step
DEC. 19—The University of Pittsburgh Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence’s will host “ The Second Step: Developing a Business Plan” from 7:30-10:30 a.m. at the University of Pittsburgh, Mervis Hall, Roberto Clemente St., Oakland. Attendees will learn about operational and production planning, conducting market research and creating financial planning spreadsheets to attract funding for one’s business. JAN. 7—Chatham University’s Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship will host an Open House from 8:30-10 a.m. at its Eden Hall Campus, Lodge Dining Room, 6035 Ridge Rd., Gibsonia, Pa. This is an opportunity for interested women to network with other women entrepreneur and women in business, to learn more about the Center’s programming and meet the staff.
