Pittsburgh native and University of Pittsburgh graduate, Bakari Thompson recently self-published his first book #TeenLife. This book includes a 36 set collection of inspirational poetry that was mostly written during his teenage years of life.

He dealt with depression and struggled with his identity as a homosexual. He attempted suicide many times, but failed to follow through. Bakari knew he had a greater purpose in life and hopes his published book can inspire LGBT teenagers across the globe.

“If I had someone who inspired me during these years, I would have accepted myself as gay a long while ago,” Bakari admits.

According to the Center for Disease Control, CDC, LBGT teens who don’t feel valued are more likely to experience depression, attempt suicide, use drugs and alcohol, and become infected with sexually transmitted diseases. All but the last factor Bakari has experienced.

LGBT youth are twice as likely to commit suicide and this is why Bakari wants to reach as many youth as possible, stating that, “If I could prevent at least one teen from giving up on life I feel my job is complete.”

Bakari’s plans to continue writing and being a living inspiration for all youth going through life feeling like they want to give up.
#TeenLife is available for purchase through Amazon.com (worldwide) and will soon be available in bookstores nationwide.
