New Horizon Theater re -teamed with Chicago-based musical playwright Joe Plummer to open its 2014/2015 season.
“Our audiences love plays with music and they love Joe Plummer’s plays,” explained New Horizon Theater Chairperson, Joyce Meggerson-Moore. “We have produced all of his plays and they have been received well by our audiences.”
And this one will have the same track record.
“Queens of the Blues,” which was written by Plummer and his fiancée Sanetta Y. Gipspn, is a fantasy that takes place in Heaven. God summons band mates Thomas Dorsey and Tampa Red, giving the pair 90 minutes to see if they can get Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Koko Taylor and Etta James out of Purgatory and earn their wings.
“It’s one of the better plays that I’ve done in my estimation,” said Plummer who is based in Chicago. “These people lived full lives. They were taking care of themselves and earning their own bread. When women do that they are known as bitches. But these four women were really interesting and very powerful and living their own lives.
