EBONY magazine is pleased to announce the appointment of former Vibe senior content producer, Aliya S. King, as the publication’s new entertainment editor. She will report directly to Mitzi Miller, editor-in-chief of EBONY, effective immediately.
“I have followed Aliya’s work for years, and I think she’s an amazing writer,” said Miller. “I am excited to have the opportunity to work with her at EBONY as we continue to grow the brand and legacy of this iconic magazine.”
As the entertainment editor, King is responsible for securing and expanding the celebrity and entertainment content in EBONY magazine, while also assisting the brand as it continues its legacy as the authentic voice and curator of the African-American experience, past, present and future.
Prior to joining the EBONY staff, King was responsible for news, trend-pieces, celebrity coverage and video production across platforms for Vibe and Vibe.com. In that role, she assigned, edited and top-edited features and cover stories. King also held editorial positions at Billboard, The Source, Upscale, Giant, and america. As a former freelance writer, her profiles, news stories and features have appeared in Nylon, CMJ:New Music Monthly, King, Ms, Us Weekly, Teen People, Seventeen, Latina, Essence, and Black Enterprise.
Aliya has written nearly 50 cover stories for national magazines including pieces on Chris Brown, Faith Evans, Christina Aguilera, La La Vasquez, Kelly Rowland, Fantasia, Tracee Ellis Ross, Christina Milian, Mariah Carey, T.I., Sean “Diddy” Combs, Taraji Henson, Queen Latifah and Idris Elba to name a few.

King was born and raised in East Orange, New Jersey, and is a graduate of Rutgers University with a B.A. in African-American History and certification in Secondary Education from the Rutgers Graduate School of Education. She was awarded ASCAP’s Deems Taylor Award for magazine writing in 2005 for her story, “Love and Unhappiness,” published in Vibe, about the mysterious 1974 death that took place in the home of soul singer Al Green.
She is also the author of several books, including novels such as Platinum and Diamond Life. She also co-authored the New York Times Bestseller, Keep the Faith, with platinum-certified recording artist Faith Evans, and collaborated with former drug dealer, Frank Lucas, on his memoir, Original Gangster.
