Small Business Basics
    AUG. 7—Chatham University’s Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship and SCORE Pittsburgh will host a “Small Business Basics” workshop from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Chatham University, Eden Hall Campus, 6035 Ridge Rd., Gibsonia, Pa. This workshop is for women interested in starting their own business or expanding their current one. Industry experts will discuss business planning, financing, bookkeeping, marketing and legal issues pertaining to small business. Lunch & Learn
    AUG. 7—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host its Lunch & Learn Series at 12:15 p.m. at the Downtown & Business Branch, 612 Smithfield St., Downtown. The topic will be “Combating the High Costs of Low Morale.” Robert O’Friel, of O’Friel Consulting, will discuss ways to combat low morale to minimize financial impacts, reduced costs and improve one’s overall bottom line. First Step Workshop
    AUG. 7—Duquesne University’s Small Business Development Center will host its “First Step: Business Start-Up Essentials” Workshop from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at Duquesne University, Rockwell Hall, 600 Forbes Ave., Uptown. This is for new business start-ups and entrepreneurs without previous business experience. There will be a discussion on topics such as business structure and formation, employee issues, insurance, financing options and much more. Business Plan Competition Deadline
    AUG. 14—Business Plan submissions are due for the Pennsylvania Commission for Women and the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners’ Business Plan Competition for Women Business Owners. The competition will showcase emerging business and will celebrate female entrepreneurship, and the winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize to help grow their business. This is open to women business owners in Pennsylvania who started their business on or after Jan. 1, 2012. Finalists will be selected to compete at the 2014 Women’s Mentorship Symposium, Sept. 30, in Pittsburgh. For more information, visit www.nawbopabizplancomp.org.

    AUG. 14—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host its Lunch & Learn Series at 12:15 p.m. at the Downtown & Business Branch, 612 Smithfield St., Downtown. The topic will be “How to Start a Food Truck Business.” This informative session on starting one’s own Pittsburgh food truck will teach the rules and regulations, best practices, and how to cook up a great business plan. Brown Bag Lunch Series
    AUG. 20—Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania will host its Brown Bag Lunch Series from 12-1 p.m. at the Volunteers of America of Pa headquarters, 1650 Main St., Pittsburgh. The topic will be “Media Marketing” facilitated by Ola Jackson of the Onyx Women Network. This is a celebration of Black Business Month and an opportunity for attendees to learn how to build their voice in the Pittsburgh market from Jackson, a business veteran. Registration is requested.
