The United Steelworkers and longtime ally the Pittsburgh A. Philip Randolph Institute are proud to announce their collaboration with the Thelma Lovette YMCA and the Energy Innovation Center. This partnership will build upon the APRI’s existing work force development program, “Breaking the Chains of Poverty,” to promote access to exercise facilities among marginalized communities, as well as providing skill-building and career opportunities to the families who already utilize the YMCA. To kick off this partnership, the groups unveiled a USW-sponsored scoreboard, which was followed by an Amateur Athletic Union basketball game.
“Each of the organizations behind this effort believes that strong communities require access to educational opportunities, quality employment and resources to cultivate healthy lifestyles. This partnership promotes all these goals, providing a range of resources to disadvantaged Pittsburgh residents,” the USW said in a release.
