The Heinz History Center in Association with The Smithsonian Institution, celebrated the legends of Jazz in Western Pennsylvania.
With video flashbacks of the many artist who were native Pittsburghers such as: Johnny Costa, (1922-1996); Billy Eckstine, (1914 -1993); Errol Garner, (1921-1977); Henry Mancini, (1924 -1994); Billy Strayhorn, (1915-1967); Mary Lou Williams, (1910–1981); and Maxine Sullivan (1911-1987) to name a few.
The honored ceremony, held in the lovely third floor atrium at the History Center, located at 1212 Smallman St., in the Strip District, was supported by the California University of Pennsylvania Music Department, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Jazz Programing and the Pittsburgh Public Schools Creative and Performing Arts Magnet School, coordinated by Bernard Black and under the musical direction of Paul Thompson. Local jazz Etta Cox was also featured.
