“As far as jurisdictions go, this is up to the school board,” she said. “For council to do this sets a precedent that makes it harder for them to do their jobs.”
Superintendent of Schools Linda Lane could not attend because of a previously scheduled meeting with representatives from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which funded the consultants who helped develop the new teacher evaluations.
In a statement, she called council’s action “regrettable.”
“Councilwoman Kail-Smith seeks to engage city council in this process in a way that is not within council’s jurisdiction and may confuse the public,” she wrote. “The resolution is not supported by facts or information necessary to address a topic of such importance.”
