The Pittsburgh Public Schools, Westinghouse Senior Class Sponsors, and Westinghouse Alumni Association hosted the Miss Westinghouse Pageant, a spectacular event held at the school.
The pageant was held May 21, in the school auditorium. The purpose of the pageant is to recognize young women in grades 9-12 whose academics and character demonstrate school pride, confidence, and success as well as a desire to pursue a post-secondary education.
The young ladies compete to be crowned queens of the school with the 12th grade winner becoming Miss Westinghouse for an entire year. They are judged in six categories: academic and social achievement, issue-cause essay, professional interview expression, artistic expression in talent, presence and poise in eveningwear and casual wear.
The prizes awarded to the contestants are Âscholarships, cash for issues-causes of interest, crowns, flowers, college gift baskets, sashes, and trophies.
Also, volunteers will be rewarded with small tokens of appreciation for their involvement in the pageant. Male students participate as escorts to walk the females on the stage for different categories of the pageant. Entertainment will be used as fillers in between grade level competition, intermission, score tally, etc. Such acts include performances from PPS CAPA and Westinghouse students and PPS/private school elementary students.
The pageant supports educational and community excellence by working with individuals and organizations that are offering mini lessons to strengthen the participants’ ability to perform at great levels of success.
